Project Development
Our core project development expertise is in the sustainable
land use and forestry sector, particularly community-based
projects in developing countries. The founders of ECCM formulated
and developed the Plan Vivo System in collaboration with the
University of Edinburgh in 1996, making it one of the earliest
voluntary emission reduction systems for sustainable land
use projects. Plan Vivo was subsequently transferred to a
not-for-profit organisation that oversees the development
and governance of the system.
Our expertise in helping develop land use and forestry projects
includes:
- Understanding the scientific basis of carbon uptake,
storage and recycling within terrestrial ecosystems.
- Integrating commercial, social, biodiversity and hydrological
considerations into projects.
- Design of data collection and processing systems appropriate
for projects involving a range of stakeholders with different
technical and management capabilities.
- Understanding the legal, regulatory, tax and commercial
requirements of projects.
- Distilling and communicating the commercial and policy
relevance of scientific advances in this field.
Our services include:
- Planning and supporting the development of terrestrial
carbon sequestration projects.
- Assessing compatibility with Kyoto and other land use
project standards.
- Working with project partners, local organisations and
communities to alleviate poverty and deliver sustainable
rural livelihoods.
- Setting regional baselines and developing technical specifications
for forestry and land use activities.
- Assessing the carbon sequestration potential of projects
and sites.
- Monitoring carbon uptake and storage.
- Carbon accounting of forestry and land use practices.
- Assessing the social and ecological impacts of projects.
- Designing project mechanisms and structures to facilitate
carbon and rural development.
- Training and capacity building
